When a Senior Dog Can No Longer Walk: How EFT Helped Bear Stop Howling

An energy healing case study for a senior dog struggling with anxiety and howling when left behind.

Client Privacy Note: Names of animals and their humans have been changed and locations approximated to protect client confidentiality. Details of the energy work are shared as they happened.

Case at a Glance:

  • Animal: Bear (10-Year-Old Male Mastiff)
  • Primary Issue: Howling and crying every time his human left with the younger dog for a walk. Bear was living with arthritis, weak hips and recurring lumps, which his vet managed through several surgeries.
  • Energetic & Emotional Findings: A deep sense of losing his purpose as the household’s protector, sadness at being left behind, and an old fear rooted in watching another dog attack his companion. His solar plexus and throat chakras were out of balance, while his heart chakra was remarkably strong.
  • Modality Used:EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), with both Bear and his human.
  • Outcome: After two EFT sessions, Bear stopped howling when his family went for walks, and he stayed settled and comfortable in the months that followed.

Every time Kate clipped the lead onto Luna and stepped out of the door, the howling began. It came from Bear, her ten-year-old mastiff, and it rang through their Florida home until the two of them returned. Bear had walked beside Kate for years, and now his arthritic hips kept him at home while the younger dog went out in his place. This is a story about EFT for a senior dog howling when left behind, and about a big, loyal dog working out who he was once his body had changed.

A Protector Who Could No Longer Walk

Bear lived with Kate, her partner Mark, and Luna, the other dog of the house. He was a large, gentle mastiff in his senior years, living with arthritis and weak hips, and with lumps that kept returning after each removal. His vet had seen him through several surgeries, and walking any real distance had become too much for him.

Kate is a Reiki practitioner herself, and she had been giving Bear Reiki regularly, which he loved. She reached out because she wanted to try something new for the howling, and she had heard about EFT tapping for animals.

March 25th: Animal Communication With Bear

When I connected with Bear through telepathic animal communication, his loyalty came through first. He was a protector at heart, the one who watched over the household and kept everyone safe. He loved Kate with his whole being, and I saw pink hearts around her. He loved everyone in the family, Luna included, and he was a big love bug who adored snuggling. One image he shared stayed with me: Bear with his nose right up close to Kate’s face, watching her. Another showed the two of them walking together into a sunset.

Underneath all that love sat a great deal of anxiety. Walking beside Kate had been his job, and that job had been taken from him. He felt insecure in a way that went to the core of who he was, and he put it more clearly than I ever could:

“If I cannot guard and cannot walk, then who am I?”

When I asked about his surgeries, his answer was full of trust: “Do what you have to do. I trust Kate and all the decisions she makes.”

Kate then shared two things that brought the whole picture together. Bear had always been especially close to Mark. And the howling had started after an incident on a walk, when a large dog attacked Luna and Bear, with his weak hips, could do nothing to protect her.

What the Energy Scan Showed

Bear’s chakras told the same story his words had. His root and sacral chakras were fine. His solar plexus, the centre of confidence and personal purpose, was out of balance, which fit a dog who no longer knew what his role was. His throat chakra was out of balance too, the centre of expression, and in Bear’s case that expression had become howling. His third eye was fine, and his crown hesitated at first before settling.

His heart chakra was very strong, and that told me a lot. Bear’s love for his family was fully intact. What he was struggling with was where to put it now.

A New Job for Bear

From that animal communication and healing session came a simple and lovely idea. If Bear could no longer be the protector who walked beside Kate, he could take on a new role as companion to Kate and Mark, the steady presence at home who keeps them company. Kate loved it. It gave Bear something to be, beyond something he had lost.

The First EFT Session: Kate

We began with EFT for Kate, tapping on everything she felt each time Bear howled. She described how much it hurt to see him upset, how she wanted to help him and felt she could do nothing more, and how leaving him behind felt like abandoning him. Some old feelings of being left behind came up for her as well, and as we tapped, she cried. By the end, she had come back to what she truly wanted: in a perfect world, she and Bear would spend time together at the beach, and their relationship would be full of joy.

The First EFT Session: Bear

Then it was Bear’s turn. His tapping went straight to the heart of it:

“When Luna goes for a walk, I feel left out. I cry and cry. I want to walk with them too. Kate does everything she can and I love her. I really want to walk with Kate. That’s my job. And now I cannot.”

The memory of the attack surfaced too:

“It reminds me of that big dog, and I could not do anything. I feel I am going to lose Kate.”

We stayed with that sadness for several rounds, and Bear came to the same place Kate had: in a perfect world, they would be at the beach together, and he would be the perfect companion for Kate and Mark.

The Messy Middle

After that first session, Bear was still howling. Old patterns rarely release all at once, especially when they are tied to something as big as a sense of purpose, so we booked a second session for the following week.

March 31st: The Second EFT Session

Kate’s tapping this time came from a different place. She had tried taking Bear on walks, and it had made things worse. She was coming to accept that leaving him at home was the kindest choice, and that she could stop trying to make the old routine work. We tapped through the guilt of leaving him behind, until Kate could see Bear simply as he was: a good dog whose body could no longer walk the way it once did.

Bear’s tapping was tender and honest:

“There they go again. Out for a walk. I want to go too. I so badly want to go for a walk with Kate. But here I am and they are gone. I feel so alone.”

He knew people thought he cried too much, and that made him sadder still, because being left behind was simply unbearable for him. And once again, his heart came through:

“I know Kate does her best. She cares and I love her.”

We closed with the same picture: Bear at the beach with his family, being the perfect companion for Kate and Mark.

Where Bear Is Now

A week later, Kate wrote to tell me she had gone for a walk after a long break, and Bear had stayed at home without howling.

Some time after that, she sent this note:

“Hi Idee, Just wanted to say that Bear has been doing so well after our session. Right after the second session, I could see how comfortable he was. We went for a walk. And no more crying. I cannot believe how powerful EFT is. It really works. You are amazing.”

Bear stayed settled in the months that followed. Kate and I are still in touch, and as a fellow practitioner, she continued to support him with her own energy work.

What This Case Taught Me About EFT for Senior Dogs

When a senior dog’s body slows down, the hardest part is often the loss of who they used to be, more than any physical limit. Bear’s howling was grief for his role as Kate’s protector and walking companion. EFT gave both of them a way to move through that grief, and once Bear had a new job to step into, the howling eased on its own.

Kate’s note mentions how comfortable Bear looked after the second session. In my experience, emotional distress and physical discomfort tend to feed each other, especially in older animals, and easing one often helps the body settle too. Bear’s arthritis stayed under his vet’s care throughout. What changed was how he felt about being at home, and that made all the difference to the family.

If This Sounds Like Your Dog

Every animal’s emotional journey is unique, but if your senior dog struggles with distress, howling, or a loss of purpose as their body changes, make sure you have appropriate medical attention and care from your veterinarian first to manage any underlying physical pain or health conditions. On top of that, you can include energy healing practices like EFT tapping to support their emotional balance and make the transition so much easier for them and your family. For extra emotional support during stressful moments, keeping a gentle natural aid like Bach Rescue Remedy on hand can also help ease sudden anxiety.
